Adopting an older dog not only has numerous benefits for the pet itself, but it also has major benefits for the people who adopt them. In Benefits of Adopting an Older Dog, we explore why adopting an older dog is a great decision.

Do you want a friend that is always there for you, no matter what? Do you want a loyal and friendly dog that will brighten your days? If you answered yes to both of those questions, then adoption may be the perfect solution for you!

Puppyhood Is Short-Lived

It’s easy to see why many people look to adopt a puppy. They are so cute. You’re getting a younger dog that you can almost mold into your life, that is, if they will have it, lol. But remember, puppies grow into adult dogs. Every adult dog started out as a cute puppy. It doesn’t take long for the puppy to lose its puppy cuteness and comical puppy ways and become an adult.

Activity Level

Most senior dogs typically need less exercise than younger pups do. This means that an older dog is more likely to be comfortable in a smaller space and won’t require as much time spent running and playing.

Behavioral Issues

Puppies tend to have a bit harder time adjusting to new surroundings. After all, they have been with their mom and litter mates for the first weeks of their lives.

They haven’t learned what the difference is between a chew toy and furniture legs.

Older dogs are more content and relaxed than a puppy, and some of the puppy stage destructive behavior has been worked through.

So if you take the time from the start to show your older dog the ropes of the house and exactly what you expect from them, they catch on very quickly.

This makes it easier for everyone when things begin heading in the right direction from the start.

Cost

While many puppies can be expensive to adopt, most adult dogs are available at a more reasonable price, especially if you are considering a purebred.

House Trained

Many times an adult dog has been house-trained and is generally easier to care for than a puppy. Being that I might be able to sidestep the potty training is an added bonus in my mind.
